Cooking has become very blah to me over the years. It was never something I loved doing. I don't hate it either. But my kids seem to hate food and listening to them complain at every meal stifles any longing I had deep within me to be creative in the kitchen. However, inspiration surfaced at lunch the other day. If you see an owl on a branch, you are very gracious.
If you have picky eaters, I'd love to hear how you changed their eating habits, dealt with the complaining at the table, and would love any kid approved recipes you'd like to pass along.
I have no great tips, but let me tell you, you aren't alone. I do love to cook and haven't changed what I cook, but I'm constantly making a simpler meal on the side, which drives me crazy. Jonah won't eat soup (which is a grad-student family staple) or anything mixed together (though he loves sushi rolls, pizza and fried rice - go figure).
ReplyDeleteHe would eat anything until he was three and now I rarely have a meal he'll eat. He won't even eat peanut butter anymore. He would subsist on whole wheat tortillas with butter and jam rolled inside if I would let him.
Do you do vitamins? I hadn't until recently as I don't think they should be necessary, but with him being so picky I started, but still can't decide what I feel about that.
Oh, the best healthy kid foods in our house are frozen peas (he'll eat tons of them) and edamame (soybeans) lightly salted.
My kids do like edamame. I think they're drawn to the process of taking them out of their pods. Hey, whatever works. Well, I thought I had it bad but I AM glad my kids eat peanut butter. Its a fav for all 3. And since I buy all natural, I know its just plan old good protein. Dinners are my problem area. I refuse to cook side meals for them so if they don't eat, they go hungry (which they often prefer). I just hate when they go hungry though. Ugh. It doesn't seem to bother them but it bothers me. We do a daily multivitamin....when we remember. :)
